About GNA11
GNA11 encodes the alpha subunit of a heterotrimeric G protein that relays signals from cell-surface receptors to pathways controlling calcium release, cell growth, and differentiation. Germline changes in GNA11 are associated with familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia type II and autosomal dominant hypocalcemia type 2, which alter the body’s sensitivity to extracellular calcium. GNA11 functions as an oncogene and is involved in uveal melanoma and, less commonly, cutaneous melanoma through persistent activation of downstream growth-signaling pathways.
