About LMNA
LMNA produces lamin A and lamin C, proteins that form the supportive meshwork lining the inside of the nucleus and help maintain nuclear shape, organize chromatin, regulate gene activity, and support DNA repair. Changes in LMNA are associated with several laminopathies, including Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy, cardiomyopathy, muscular dystrophy, partial lipodystrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome. In cancer, LMNA can act predominantly as an oncogene; increased production or gene amplification has been linked to tumor growth, cell migration, invasion, and several cancer types.
